Kinja'd!!!

I believe I’m going to sell my 2016 WRX STi on the private market and get a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0t with a 6-sp manual transmission. I love my STi, but with the amount I’m commuting now, it’s just not very practical and I’m not using it for how it was intended. I know it’s not a crime to want a comfortable stick shift car with adaptive cruise control and all the other modern safety features my STi lacks, but it still feels weird. In a few years when I’m done with school and have space, I’m planning on getting an old MGB-GT for a fun weekend car. I test drove the Accord and it was a pleasure to drive and it’s going to be significantly better suited to my commute which is like 44 miles each way on bumpy Connecticut highway. Please tell me I’m not insane for wanting a comfy ride, better safety features, and a better infotainment system.

You don’t need a fast car to be a car guy. The Accord seems like a really nice car for the price, and with the 2.0t and a stick I’m sure it’s still a blast to wring out.

Solid Choice. The 2.0T and manual has been getting really good reviews. You really can’t go wrong with an Accord. Could you get a used manual German sedan for the same price (around 28K I believe)?

While i personally dont care for the accords looks, theyre supposed to be solid cars. And honest, the mentality of comfy, safer, and better tech in a daily is some of the bigger reasons i picked up my current daily.

I just drove a Sport 2.0, but with the CVT, and I really liked the car, other than the transmission (which was still good for a CVT).

Dealer didn’t have a 3rd pedal version, but I think this would be a great choice with a manual. I loved the steering, had plenty of power, comfy, roomy, etc etc etc.

tl;dr - do it

Thanks. Yeah, the car wasn’t quite as responsive as my STi, but it felt torquey and like it had a bit of soul. Plus, being able to get 10+ mpg better while also being able to buy lower grade gas is a nice plus too.

Have you checked out the Civic Si? It should be a fair bit comfier than the STI but it would lack all the safety tech. I mention it because it might give a little more tossable feel than the Accord.

I find this philosophy fascinating. I know that I picked up my STi because I wanted a modern, comfortable, and safe car to commute in. But this is because I had been dailying a Miata for 3 years so my perspective is whack lol. Its just funny to me because I think of the STi as my far too complicated and modern vehicle to get me to and from places that involve long seat time and lots of highway. Its just a better suited vehicle than my Miata for that. It has AC and a roof that actually keeps out the wind/sun. Plus it has paint on it and far fewer miles so less stuff breaks. Yeah I get shit for gas mileage but who cares when I can blast down the road with my 300hp! Lol its just interesting to me since the previous owner of my car had the exact same sentiment as you and went with a Lexus for the same reasons. At least you are staying manual!

Like my first car was a 71 MGB-GT and my second was a MR2 spyder so I totally get that perspective too. When I switched to the WRX and then the WRX STi, it felt SO much more luxurious. I know this is pretentious, but the driving roads out here in Connecticut are so bad compared to SoCal that it’s just not worth it. I was used to driving the canyons every weekend which made the cars faults tolerable and endearing, but now that I’m doing more highway and fewer PCH runs. Every time I get in I just have the urge to stretch it’s legs and I have nowhere to do so which honestly makes me a bit sad. I go back to SoCal a few times a year to visit family and I’m able to have quite a bit of fun out there with my mom’s RC-F which is nice.

The Exocet has upset the balance/needs of my garage, so I have plans to eventually shift my Outback and NC into a tow vehicle and something comfortable and reasonably fuel-efficient for commuting and road trips (but not totally soulless). For the later of those two, that 2.0t + MT Accord sure is looking like a very promising candidate.

Now is the time to ask something I’ve been wondering about: You mentioned adaptive cruise and stick shift. How does it work? When it has to slow down how does it not stall? And will it try to go 70 mph in 3rd gear?

Just asking

Actually I don’t think any of the sport trims come with CVT, only the base and touring and whateverthehell. I could be wrong on the 1.5 though.

I don’t mind the cruiser option if it’s the right car for your needs. This is not a bad choice at all. But how much of your commute is in stop & go traffic? If you have a lot of that would you really still want a manual?

I also wonder how well the pre-collision braking works with the manual transmission. Honda lists it in the specs for the manual model, at least. I just know Subaru doesn’t offer EyeSight on manual transmission models because they can’t get the active safety to play nice with the stick shift.

Definitely not insane, and I think the Accord is an excellent choice. In fact I have already made up my mind that when I am ready to pick up a new daily driver in a couple years I’m probably going to also be picking up an Accord too.

Except I’ll probably be looking for a 17' V6 coupe. Just because they are the end of an era. The last coupe and V6 ever offered in an Accord.

Kinja'd!!!

Plus honestly I have some concerns about long term reliability of the smaller turbo engines. Their old outgoing V6's on the other hand are excellent reliable engines that have been thoroughly refined through many iterations.

At those distances you are on the highway just about the whole trip, so there isn’t a difference between manual and automatic. The auto is only good for stop and go, which if you have on top of 44mi your commute is just too damn long and you should move or try to find a new job.

You’d be spending $300-$400 per month just on gas which could be put towards higher rent/mortgage closer to work and save you the extra hour of commuting (I know I value skipping rush hour traffic at about $20, which works out to about $400 per month).

“Better infotainment system” - you haven’t been in a new Honda lately, have you?

Also, ew. Ugly, even in black. Buy buying one you are affirming Honda’s choice to make their cars borderline offensive to look at.

Mazda6 has the turbo engine this year and leads the pack in torque, their infotainment system - while slow at times - is intuitive, user-friendly, and functional.

Fusion - while slightly dated now - has a lot of great features, is roomy, and can get AWD, so you’d miss your Subaru less.

Sonata & Optima are both pretty solid.

Camry is a class standard, and while I don’t like the new one’s exterior, it still has the V6 available, which is tried, true, and reasonably potent.

From what I understand, you engage it when in gear while cruising on the highway and if you shift, it automatically deactivates or if you’re near stalling. It seems a bit more complicated than in an automatic, however it seems really nice if you’re chilling in 6th in the left lane.

I daily a 5-spd Tacoma, but my other car is a ‘15 Accord. I love my truck for many reasons, but it is so nice to slide into that Accord and ride in comfort every so often. I don’t blame anyone for wanting an Accord.

Good on you though, for holding out for the Sport with the 6-spd. I argued hard for that, but ended up with an EX with a CVT. I don’t hate the CVT, but I wouldn’t choose it if it was up to me alone.
